Find Your Fit with CrossFit

It is no secret that I'm a die hard CrossFit girl. I've been floating in and out of the 'world of fast exercising' since first discovering it in 2012. Way back then, it was a fledgling concept that had gone off in America, and gyms (or boxes as they are known in CrossFit speak) were starting to appear on the Australian landscape...and I wanted in!

 

But what is CrossFit, well in a nutshell and straight from the horses aka CrossFit HQs mouth, "CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. These are the core movements of life."

 

Seriously though, let's throw all proper definitions aside, because there's a whole other thing that CrossFit has nailed and that is the CULT MENTALITY. And I mean that in the best possible way!

What CrossFit offers is a total departure from 'normal gyms'.

 

Dogs and babies are welcomed.

 

Shirts are optional.

 

And the people of the box are key. 

 

So popular is this perfect symbioses of community and fitness, that CrossFit boxes are now scattered all over the country and the world. In fact, CrossFitters are connected globally, not only by our unique language (EMOM, AMRAP, HSPU...anyone?) but also by our shared understanding of its life altering effects on our minds and bodies!

 

Basically, once you've done it, you're hooked and its all you will ever talk about!! I have seen a zillion folks drink the CrossFit KoolAid, hell I'm one of 'em, but my cherry was popped so long ago I thought I'd ask a CrossFit newbie to tell us all about finding his fit with CrossFit.

 

Meet Dave. Dave just started CrossFit. Dave just completed a WOD (workout of the day).

In the interests of fairly road testing CrossFit, newbie Dave and I recently did this WOD together and it was as tough as it looks here. Afterwards we had a chat about his induction into CrossFit.

 

Dave, a 27 year old firefighter from Melbourne has always played sport and would consider himself a fairly fit fellow. So why CrossFit Dave?  As he explains, "I wanted to give CrossFit a try not only for something new, but I was getting bored doing the same old thing at my regular gym."

 

As I would whole heartedly attest to, Dave is loving the challenge and constant variation in the training.

 

And like most newbies to CrossFit, Dave has worked out his strengths, but like a harsh Italian Grandmother, CrossFit will quickly slap you in the face with your weaknesses too!

 

According to Dave, "The main goals I want to achieve are being able to do all the technical movements like overhead squats, clean and jerks and snatches. Oh and also become more flexible, so I can do those technical movements."

 

"Whereas I think my strength is that I don't give up easily. I keep on pushing though the workouts. Even though they are so tough." he laughs remembering just how nasty our WOD of Overhead Squats and bar jumpover Burpees was!

 

Look at us smashing it out!!

 

"Overall I'm loving the positive energy at the box. Everyone is very welcoming and encouraging and that really pushes you to chase those PBs. Honestly there isn't anything I'm not loving about CrossFit so far."

 

And just like that, we have a new member to the tribe.

 

When I chatted to CrossFit Calder's co-owner Luke Anderson about that CrossFit X-Factor, he too pointed out just how powerful the connection is between CrossFit and its people, and how much that has aided in CrossFit's outrageous success,

 

"Before CrossFit, I worked in those larger scale gyms as a PT, you know the ones where you can be totally anonymous as one in 100, 500 or even 1000 other members! When I talk to a new person looking to join CrossFit, I can assure them that within the first ten minutes of class, they are about to make a dozen or more new friends! CrossFit communities breed positivity and an 'every one can have a go' philosophy all backed by encouragement...and fist bumps!"

 

So it seems that this old dog (ughh that would be me) and the new pup (Dave) are now CrossFit kindred spirits...covered in chalk, dripping with sweat and wearing a smile. Why? Because we survived damn it!
