I wanted to do a blog on hydration, especially at this time of year when it's easy to forget to drink water, seeing as we’re not sweltering in the sun.
But how do I write passionately about something as simple as, ‘are you drinking enough water?’ You know, without sounding like a boring public service announcement. I mean there’s the obligatory “Our body needs water to survive” or “You must drink 8 glasses per day”, but what else is there to know?
Well here’s a few things you may not know about drinking water, aka Fun Facts.
Did you know that water directly impacts your mood and energy levels? That’s right, if you find that you’re chronically grumpy or tired, perhaps you’re not drinking enough water. Try starting your morning off with a big glass of warm water and lemon. Drinking warm water first thing is a gentle way of kick starting your hydration for the day. The thermic effect of the warm water also helps everything else to get moving too…like your digestive system.
Throughout the day our bodies pick up a myriad of toxins; from the air, in our food and ones that we put on our skin and hair. Well good old water helps to flush out those toxins, along with waste and bacteria. In fact, water is the primary mode of transportation for all nutrients in the body and is essential for proper circulation, ideal in these colder months.
Have you reached for a sip of water yet?
How about now?
Well in that case, you’ll like this one. Good hydration can improve the colour and texture of your skin. Helping it build new cells and giving you that youthful glow. Can I get hellz yeah? Talk about fountain of youth!
Then there’s this, studies have shown that staying hydrated keeps the cartilage soft and fluid, so it can significantly reduce back pain, joint pain as well as reduce headaches!
So, how much is enough?
A big gold star if you’re happily chugging 8 glasses or more a day. But what if you work out, or if you’re in an artificially heated office space, or if you’re an excessive sweater, or your digestive system is sluggish, or perhaps you’re unwell?
Are 8 glasses a day really enough?
Taking in your activity levels and really listening to your body, is the best way to know how much is right for you?
And here’s a quick tip, check out your pee! If its cloudy or dark yellow then you need to get drinking (water!). If it’s a pale straw colour, then you, my friend, are happily hydrated, keep it up! Side note: Don’t be alarmed if you’re taking a multi-vitamin or B Vitamin, it could change the colour of your pee. Making it bright yellow! Needing to pee every half hour or so is also a great indication that you’re hydrated, but if in doubt, drink a little water. I mean it’s a difficult thing to overdo.
Recently, I’ve been lucky enough to team up with the gang at The Big Bottle Co, to try out their signature Big Bottle. These gorgeous to carry around, 2.2 litre beauties are BPA and BPS free, dishwasher and freezer safe. Big and bold, it’s virtually impossible to forget to drink from and if you’re competitive like me…you’ll want to finish it (and refill it again) before the end of the day!
And, do you want to hear the good news?!
Make sure you’re following my Instagram, as I’ll be giving away a BIG BOTTLE to one my lucky followers very soon!
